Fishing onDauphin Island
Gulf surf on one side, calm bay water on the other, a charter fleet at the marina, and the largest saltwater tournament in the world every July.
Where to fish
Dauphin Island gives you Gulf surf on one side and the calmer Mississippi Sound on the other, which means something is usually fishable when the wind is up on the other side.
Piers
The town runs a public fishing pier at East End Landing — 250 feet out into the mouth of Mobile Bay, next to two public boat launches. It is bay water, not Gulf surf, which makes it the reliable option when the Gulf is blown out. For a longer pier on the Gulf side, Cedar Point Pier is a Mobile County park across the bay on the Dauphin Island Parkway (18250 Dauphin Island Pkwy, Coden), about 25 minutes by car.
Surf and jetty fishing
The Gulf beaches along the west end and the rocks near the east tip are the classic spots. Surf fishing works best in the early morning and evening, and the beach that is too rough to swim is often the one worth fishing.
Back bays and canals
The bay side and the canal neighborhoods hold redfish, speckled trout and flounder. This is kayak water: calm, shallow and full of structure. The town maintains public boat launches, plus the Bayou Heron Park & Kayak Launch at 1514 Cadillac Avenue.
Charters and the marina
Inshore and offshore charter operators run out of Dauphin Island Marina. Book ahead in summer and around the rodeo.
License and rules
Alabama requires a saltwater fishing license for most anglers, and there are size and bag limits for the species you will catch here. Check the current rules before you wet a line — the Alabama Marine Resources Division (251-861-2882) is the authority, and the state sells licenses online.
The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo
Every July the island hosts the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, the largest saltwater fishing tournament in the world and a Guinness World Record holder. It began in 1929 with 260 anglers; today it draws more than 3,000 competitors and tens of thousands of visitors across the weekend.
If you are on the island during rodeo week, book lodging and tables early and expect the marina and the bridge to be busy.
Eat what you catch
Many rentals have kitchens, and buying fresh shrimp to boil in is a local ritual. Skinner's Seafood is the island market for that. Where to eat on the island →
